The REACH regulation on Isocyanates is changing, with the entry into force of a new regulation.

On August 3, 2020, a restriction on diisocyanates under the REACH regulation was adopted by the European Union authorities. This new restriction specifies the need for specific labeling and training for industrial and professional users of products containing diisocyanates with a concentration greater than 0.1% by weight. The new restriction on diisocyanates, published on August 3, 2020 by the European Union, aims to address a number of hazards and risks including respiratory and skin sensitization that can be caused by exposure to diisocyanates.

What is an Isocyanate?

Diisocyanates are molecules used in the manufacture of polyurethanes.

What does this mean for you?

From August 24, 2023, all workers handling diisocyanates and mixtures containing diisocyanates will have to be trained in their tasks and potential exposure. Training is compulsory, and must be successfully completed before handling any products. On completion of training, each worker is issued with a personal certificate. The certificate is valid for 5 years, and must be kept by you.

What is the purpose of training?

Training is the best way to ensure the safe use of diisocyanates. It must enable every worker to handle diisocyanates with sufficient knowledge of the hazards and risks associated with their use, as well as sufficient knowledge of good working practices and appropriate risk management measures. The aim is to limit allergy risks. In fact, according to the European Chemicals Agency, training users in the risks involved and the importance of respecting the measures implemented to reduce them could reduce the number of cases of occupational asthma by more than 3,000 new cases per year in Europe.

Which Höganäs products are affected by these regulations?

FB50, FB70 and FB43.

How do I get trained?

Training can be done very simply via e-learning, by logging on to https://safeusediisocyanates.eu. The site features a training selector to guide you towards the most appropriate training for your products and applications. We recommend you select the O49 training module.
